About the Author James A. Simpson, PE and LS

1923 - 2013

Jim Simpson retired from a surveying practice that he restricted to water boundaries and navigability studies. Most of his recent work was for national corporations, the United States Department of Justice and the Bureau of Land Management where the boundary of the uplands along lakes and rivers was involved in litigation.

Jim had been particularly interested in surveying throughout his engineering career. He holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering in the field of Surveying and Mapping from Purdue University. In 1970 the Bureau of Land Management recruited Jim to design and operate a training program for their own Cadastral Surveyors.

After the program was firmly established he transferred to a new position in support of the Bureau’s litigation problems along rivers and lakes. He served as BLM’s senior Riparian Boundary Specialist for nine years before retirement from government service.

His book is held in high regard by Attorneys as well as his fellow Surveyors.
